The tragic news on the 13th of December, 2022 racing fans lost an icon. Bill Zardo Sr., an accomplished racer who took part in a variety of race events over the course of his life, died at 80 years old. He was admitted into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame earlier this year. He was cherished by people who knew him and were influenced by his work. Bill Zardo Sr.’s racing career started in his home track, Pinecrest Speedway in the year 1962. He competed until the track was closed in the 1970s, however he did not let that keep him from pursuing his love of racing. When the OSCAAR Hot Rod class began in 2022, he recommenced racing, and soon became one of racing’s most popular racers of the day. He was able to win numerous times in this period as he continued to develop his abilities as a driver. He also helped others to understand how to succeed at the track.

Bill Zardo, a beloved racer and car enthusiast died from an unexpected heart attack. He was heading into his garage to work on his vehicle when tragedy occurred. The daughter of his Sharon Shepherd shared that he was in pursuit of the excitement of racing and that his passion will be remembered for all time. Bill was not one to be shy from trying something different. He was adamant about pursuing his love for cars and inspired thousands of people by his passion, determination and eagerness to discover. Anyone that knew him recall him because of the enthusiasm that he displayed for adventure when faced with the most challenging challenges of life.
How Did Bill Zardo Die?
His name will forever be associated with his extraordinary enthusiasm for racing, his commitment to help others improve their race performance, and also for being an outstanding leader, both in and off track. It’s not surprising that he left behind an impressive legacy which will encourage racers for decades to follow. He was a role model for many, always putting safety and instructing others on how to enhance their performance behind the wheel. He had his own unique brand known as “Zardology” -which was his distinct style that blended the highest level of precision with skillful driving techniques. I’ll be missing his stories about his race on the bench as well as the annual visits to Daytona in which he’d catch together with his parents and good friends, and enjoy a drink and a couple of beers at Boot Hill Saloon.
