McLendon finished 72 holes tied with Pete Fleming with a 5-under 65. The tournament’s most memorable feature was the sudden-death nine-hole playoff. McLendon won with a birdie just as the sun was setting. McLendon won his second TOUR title at the 1976 Southern Open at Green Island Country Club Columbus. McLendon won the Florida Citrus Open at Rio Pinar Country Club, his largest check in his career, and he played four rounds under 70, including a 36-hole last day to defeat a leading board full of future World Golf Hall of Famers. McLendon participated in 326 PGA TOUR events during his career. McLendon turned 50 in 1995. He never attempted to become a PGA TOUR Champion. He made his last TOUR appearances in 1981 at the Pensacola Open, and then, one week later, at the Walt Disney World National Team Championship, where he was paired with Leonard Thompson.
McLendon spent his TOUR career in financial services in Birmingham, Alabama. McLendon is a member of LSU Athletics Hall of Fame as well as the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. McLendon’s wife Joan, his 55-year-old daughter Amy (Jason), McLevaine, and his two grandchildren are his survivors. Lance, his son, preceded him in dying.
