Marcus Ryder took to social media to grieve the loss of Mona. He tweeted: “It’s with sadness that we wake up to the sad news Mona Hammond has passed away. She co-founded Talawa Theatre Company, which she founded in 1985, among other achievements. She is also a @RADA_London graduate and was awarded an honorary RADA Fellowship for 2019.

How Did Mona Hammond Die?

Mona is best remembered by soap fans for her time in Albert Square as Blossom Jackson, the matriarch of Jackson clan. She joined the BBC soap set in 1994, and she remained there until 1997. She returned to the soap in 2010 and re-enacted the role for two more episodes.

Mona was originally cast as Blossom in her second appearance on the soap. She had first played the role of Michelle Fowler’s midwife on EastEnders in 1986. Mona, a well-loved soap actress, was also a popular star on the theatre. She began her acting career in the theatre.

What Happened With Mona Hammond?

Mona appeared in Josephine House and Macbeth productions. She also spent two years at The Royal National Theatre, where she participated in productions like Fuente Ovejuna, Peer Gynt, directed by Declan Donnellan and The Crucible. Mona was soon a television star, appearing on shows like The Sweeney and Juliet Bravo. She also appeared on Coronation Street, before joining the rival soap EastEnders.

Mona was also known for her role as Susu in Desmond’s in the early nineties and her subsequent stint in Porkpie. The Archers soap opera featured Mona Thompson as Mabel Thompson. Later, her acting career included roles on Holby City and Death in Paradise, as well as a role in the 2008 film 10,000 BC, which Roland Emmerich directed.

Mona was born January 1, 1931 in Jamaica. She lived there until 1959 when she came to the United Kingdom on a Jamaican Scholarship. Mona worked for Norman and Dawbarn Architects. After two years of evening classes at London’s City Literary Institute, Mona was awarded a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and graduated in 1964. In 2005, the Queen’s Birthday Honours List named her an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). Her son and granddaughter are her survivors.
