Lopez-Calleja kept a low profile and rarely appeared on television or in photographs. His power over the business had increased significantly since President Miguel Diaz Canel took over Castro’s reins in 2018.

Lopez-Calleja was a close friend of Castro’s and the chairman of GAESA. This conglomerate of military-owned companies governs most of Cuba’s industries, including luxury resorts for tourists to shops selling products in a currency other than Cubans. William LeoGrande is a Washington University government lecturer. The passing of the general, who was once a consultant for Diaz-Canel’s administration, is a blow to GAESA.

“Lopez-Calleja played a central role in the success of the foreign-exchange-earnings businesses under the umbrella of the GAESA conglomerate.” He added-“Whoever succeeds him, both at GAESA and in the political bureau, will immediately become one of Cuba’s most influential leaders, especially on economic policy,” LeoGrande said.

Rodriguez was a former military commander who was approved by the US Treasury for 2020. He was also the executive president at Grupo de Administracion Epresarial (GAESA). The army conglomerate includes banks, independent retailers, bars, cafes, money-changing functions and pharma labs. It also owns most of the island’s luxury resorts. He was featured in Bloomberg Markets’ Nov. 2015 issue.

Rodriguez was a powerful political figure on the socialist island. Rodriguez was considered a comrade to former President Raul Castro (91), and briefly was his son-in-law. He was also a member of the politburo (the only major organization in Cuba) and a founding member of the National Assembly.
